When Seniors Need Extra Help

How do you determine when your loved one needs extra senior care?

Aging and the changes that come with it are inevitable. However, when you’re watching a loved one go through some of those changes, it can be stressful. Physical and mental health can decline with age. It’s important to watch for signs that your older family members may need extra help as they get older.

One sign that your loved one may be struggling with mobility is poor upkeep around the house. If you notice cleaning or maintenance isn’t getting done around the house, it could be because those chores may be more difficult for seniors. Mobility issues can also cause trouble getting in and out of a seated position.

Forgetfulness is another sign to watch out for. Is your loved one missing appointments? Have they been neglecting to pay bills or forgetting to take medicines? We all have moments of forgetfulness but if these types of moments become more regular, you should consider talking to your loved one or other family members. This could be a good time to discuss senior care options.

Depression, low energy, and/or loss of interest can be tied to aging troubles as well. You may notice that your loved one stays in more, answers the phone less, or they stop going to church or their weekly card game. These types of changes may be developing from depression, loneliness, decreased mobility, or all of the above.

If you notice any of these signs with your older family members, there may not be an immediate problem. However, it is important to note these changes and if the changes start to become repetitive, it could be time to talk to your family about possible senior care options. Most seniors prefer to stay in their home as long as possible and there are many ways to assist seniors in their own homes.
